CICM, with the support from the Chemical Productivity Nexus (CPN), has embarked on organizing a series of Chemical Safety for Productivity Improvement sessions in the various regions in Peninsular Malaysia. One of the key objectives of these sessions is to create awareness to SMEs on chemical risk in the event of incidents or accidents in their operations, as well as legislation and penalties governing occupational safety and health.  The global chemical  industry’s Responsible Care initiative in promoting the continuous improvement of safety, health and environment (SHE) performance, as well as the Malaysia Productivity Corporation's (MPC) productivity toolkit will also be shared.

The first session took place in the Southern region at the Renaissance Johor Bahru held on September 27, 2018 (Thursday). It attracted close to 50 participants from the chemical industry, as well as chemical users.

The event began with a welcoming remarks by Mr Chung Yook Tong, CICM EXCO member and also the Chairman of the Chemical Productivity Nexus - IWG 1. It was followed by a presentation by Ir Harminder Singh, CICM RCP Technical Advisor on Chemical Risks to Health in SMEs, and En Josffa Ismail of CPN-MPC; providing an overview of his organisation, the Chemical Productivity Nexus, as well as the measuring productivity through the ezBE assessment tool. Other representatives from the Government agencies i.e. DOSH Johor and BOMBA / HAZMAT Team also shared about OSH regulations and implications from OSH incidents / accidents and BOMBA's role in hazardous materials incidents.

Ir Harminder Singh once again came on stage and briefed participants about Responsible Care and why it is essential to chemical businesses in Malaysia, before the session ended with a sharing of experience by En Tajuddin b Mohamad Yunos of IOI-Pan Century Oleochemicals Sdn Bhd, on his company's experience in the implementation of Responsible Care. His company was one of the earliest signatories to the Responsible Care initiative in Malaysia and has won one of the highest recognition i.e. the Platinum Award by CICM from its annual Responsible Care Awards.
