Message from the Secretary General of MITI for Essential Sectors that are Allowed to Run

I wish to share that, at today’s Special MKN meeting, YAB Prime Minister instructed MITI to remind all Industry Associations and Chambers of Commerce, to issue a strict reminder/ warning to members and employers to not compel their workers who are in quarantine or advised to be quarantined, to report for work or office. I cannot stress enough that such action by employers is deemed illegal as it is against the Prevention and Infectious Diseases Act (Act 342). Stern penalty and action will be taken against the employer in such instances.

The meeting was particularly concerned that there are reports of employers in the manufacturing sector who are compelling their workers to come to work, even when they are under quarantine. Not only is this an offence under Act 342, MITI is also of the view that such a move on the part of the employers is abhorrent.

I seek your immediate attention and swift action to remind members of your organisations, associations and Chambers. Thank you.

Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali
Secretary General of MITI
